Everyone wants to find other people online. Remember that with Google, the more relevant keywords you can provide, the better your chances of getting a search result that is meaningful. You have to narrow it down. Did you and Mary grow up together in Rochester, New York? Did she attend Brighton High?

Do you know that she planned to be a veterinarian when she graduated? Once you have scoured the returns on a normal search, switch to Google Image Search and see what comes up. You would be surprised at how many images there are out there! Most people have some kind of social media presence which makes it a logical place to look for someone online.

Twitter has advanced search functions that can help. You can search for individual tweets if you would like as well. Pipl is a people search web portal that does a pretty good job of locating those with an online presence. It cannot find everyone but does a good job of finding mainly US-based people. Facebook does use some information -- such as who you interact with on a regular basis -- to determine which friends appear more prominently in the news feed and at the top of the list in the chat sidebar.

Facebook also provides a "Close Friends" list you can use to receive notifications about those friends you are most interested in. None of your friends are able to tell where they are in your chat sidebar or what lists they appear on, and none of these features take profile views into account. Any third-party app or service promising to show you who has viewed your Facebook profile isn't genuine.

Facebook has confirmed there is no method for finding out who has searched for a particular person or viewed a particular profile. But, it can at least give you some insight into how often you're being googled.

The impenetrable and secure nature of Google's inner machinations is something that we all need to accept as fact. Unfortunately, it's unlikely there will ever be a way to work out who has been googling you.
